Can I just say how impressed and surprised I was at Thursdays BSC Film, Digital and HD Day in Cardiff. All too often these events can be nothing but well meaning talk-a-thons but it seems who ever organized this event made sure the emphasis was on the visual. From Richard Mills’ excellent opening of fundamentals through to Andrei Austin’s thought provoking “Waking the Dead” ‘higher echelon’ camera tests I was constantly captivated. Then to conclude the presentation part of the programme I was astonished by what Sue Gibson brought to the screen with the Comparison Tests. I would never have thought that the BSC had the balls to put money into light and actually shoot footage, in a professional way, to enable us DoPs to compare and contrast the film and digital recording formats.
If, in this early part of the 21st Century, it wasn’t already a battle for the DoP to up hold their craft, art and profession then with the ever burgeoning advance of technical improvement it is a requisite that there exists an informed discourse so that we are able to ‘separate fact from the hype’. Once again I would like to congratulate and thank everyone in the staging of the event……..

Thanks again for arranging such an excellent event! I knew a number of the local attendees and they have all told me how informative and illuminating they found the presentations and especially the comparisons.
I`m certain these road shows will go a long way to promoting understanding of the new technologies and clearing the muddied waters of HD. I look forward to details of the upcoming event in Bristol!

Thank you for all your hard work putting together the excellent HD presentation yesterday at Chapter. The individual experiences of the participants and the strong visual presentation provided a really valuable illustration of the different aspects of film and digital image capture and delivery. Richard Mills presentation was particularly impressive. I wonder if there might be an opportunity to get a copy of his power point slides.
I think that the turn out was very strong – particularly in the light of the competing EAVE presentation on the same afternoon. I know that BAFTA and Derwen as sponsors were very pleased. Good luck with future presentations.

As the Cardiff-based member of the BSC I would like to thank and congratulate Nic Morris, Sue Gibson, Martin Hammond and all the team who helped put together the BSC Film, Digital & HD Event in Cardiff. It was extremely enjoyable, informative and well presented and I think did huge credit to the BSC. It gave the audience straightforward guidance on HD , clearly showed I think the superior qualities of film as a capture medium and perhaps most importantly re-inforced the necessity of having a good DP , no matter what you shoot on.
This is definitely something we should be continuing to do.
